Three Simple Tasks That Can Prevent A Premature Air Conditioner Breakdown

Lori Harris

When you and your family have grown accustomed to the pleasant temperature provided by the air conditioner in your home, the last thing you want to experience is an A/C breakdown that has you sweating. Fortunately, there are a number of different steps that you can take to decrease the odds of your air conditioner breaking down. While it's always smart to have the entire system serviced by an HVAC contractor on an annual basis, the way you use the air conditioner day by day influences how long it will run properly. Here are three tasks that can prevent a premature breakdown.

Swap Out Your Old Filter

To work properly, your air conditioner pushes cool air through a filter to ensure that what you're breathing is clean as well as refreshing. The filter isn't something you can ignore; as long as the air conditioner is running, it's picking up particulate matter and slowly clogging the filter. When the filter is obstructed, the air conditioner won't run as efficiently, will have to run longer than it should to cool your home and will suffer more strain while it runs. It's a good rule to change your filter every two months if you have a pet that sheds its hair in your home and every three months if you don't have a pet.

Open Your Windows At Night

While keeping your window shades drawn throughout the heat of the day will prevent the rays from the sun from heating your home and forcing your A/C to work harder, it's a smart idea to shut off your system at night and open up the windows as a method of cooling your home. Of course, on certain nights that don't get cold, stick to the air conditioner. Cooling your home naturally allows your system some well-deserved rest. Otherwise, it could be running unnecessarily for multiple hours every night and aging itself prematurely.

Find Alternatives To Heat-Producing Appliances

The trouble with heat-producing appliances such as your oven and your dryer is that they warm your home during their operation. This, in turn, means that your air conditioner will have to work harder and longer to keep your home's temperature at your desired level. When it's especially hot and your A/C is running consistently, look for alternatives to using these appliances. Barbecuing your meals and hanging your clothing outside on a rack or a clothesline are two simple strategies to adopt.

Contact an A/C service if you need any repairs done.
